Undead Business Practices
A strategy isn't effective simply because it exists. If employees don't understand it, leaders don't reinforce it, and daily processes don't support it, the strategy can become disconnected from the organization it's supposed to guide.
Strategy becomes meaningful when it connects to people, structures, decisions, and everyday work.
When strategies lack alignment at their core, they're less effective right out of the gate. Here are some core tenets thta businesses incorporate that lack the alignment needed to create sustained change:
• Rankings - Many companies will provide 'rankings' of their employees in an effort to create a competitive spirit between them. Some will even offer incentives for top spots. However, this often creates a 'results-above-all-else' mentality that encourages pursuing a specific metric instead of focusing on what needs to improve in the workflow itself.
• Lack of Transparency - Some organizations will keep their metrics hidden from members instead, but this creates its own problem. Hoarding information can prevent employees from making informed decisions, and create an isolated environment that discourages teamwork.
• Indecisiveness - Efficiency within an organization has to start at the top, so it's no surprise that indecisiveness isn't an enviable trait for a manager or other higher-up. Leadership courses or more thorough internal development programs are only some possible ways to help with this issue.
