Outdated Business Strategies

October 01, 2026•1 min read

Meaningful organization development requires space to grow and change, but organizations are often plagued by outdated processes and archaic strategies that just slow them down.

Business strategy has been developing for hundreds of years, but some strategies persist despite being harmful for organizational identities:

• Replicability - Many organizations view employees and team members as replaceable entities whose lasting presence within an organization is wholly contingent on their performance. What this outlook does is reduce organization members to statistics and remove accountability at the organizational level. By investing in thorough training programs and practicing self-actualization, organizations can identify weak spots in their business practices without foisting blame on individuals.

• Aristocracy - This strategy centers around the idea that some individuals are inherently better than others due to their status or standing. It’s a practice that has been a part of civilization for hundreds of years, but manifests in modern businesses by granting decision-making power to executives who may not have all an organization’s members’ best interests in mind. When proper alignment procedures are in place, making important decisions that better the organization as a whole is an easier process.

• Incentive - A business strategy based around employee incentives makes sense on paper, but under close scrutiny contains many weaknesses. Members of an organization may focus too much on metrics or goals instead of meaningful work. Additionally, this strategy puts much of the power and agency in the hands of those creating the incentives, removing the sense of agency from those tasked with earning them.
